RegionFX
Animated water, cracked glass and ice, heat shimmer, metallic shine and more, painted onto your map where you draw them. Draw a Region, add an [RFX] behavior and adjust a few sliders. No mask images or extra art needed.
Effects
- Water: ponds, rivers and seas that bend the map beneath them, with depth, caustics, glints and shore foam.
- Crystal / Glass: a cracked, translucent sheet for broken glass, ice or crystal.
- Color Grade: recolours just the Region, for blighted forests or scorched earth.
- Metallic Shine: bands of light sweeping over metal, ice or wet stone.
- Iridescence: a drifting rainbow film for oil slicks and magic.
- Prism: red and blue fringes on bright parts of the map.
- Heat: rising, wobbling air for lava, deserts and forges.
Sizes use grid units, so an effect looks the same on any grid. Every effect except Water has an Effect Intensity slider that a macro can fade through system.effectIntensity.
Combining effects
Effects stack, each working on what is already drawn under it: Heat over Water makes the water shimmer. Two settings on every effect control this:
- Layer: below tiles, above tiles (the default) or above tokens too.
- Draw Order: higher numbers draw later, on top.
Good to know
- Effects change how things look, not lighting: darkness and fog still cover them.
- Anything on a higher elevation draws over the effect.
- A hidden Region shows no effect, for the GM as well; use its Visibility setting to hide only the outline.
Settings
- Animate effects (per user): off shows still images, e.g. on a slower computer.
Requirements
- Foundry VTT v14
Installation
In Foundry's Add-on Modules tab, choose Install Module and paste this manifest URL:

This is a personal project and stays at 0.x: expect breaking changes between versions.
Credits
The effects follow the water, metallic shine, iridescence, prism, heat distortion and color correction of Map Shine by Ingram Blakelock (MIT); the shaders here are new implementations for Regions, and the white balance formula is Map Shine's. Simplex noise: Ashima Arts / Ian McEwan, MIT License.
